Access requirements in detail
University access for qualified professionals
From 1 January 2025, new regulations for professionally qualified persons will apply in accordance with the Baden-Württemberg State Higher Education Act (LHG) until an adapted admission and enrolment regulation comes into force. Professionally qualified persons are those who:
- Have completed a recognised advanced vocational training course (e.g. master craftsman, business administrator). After a counselling interview, they receive direct university admission in accordance with § 58 Para. 2 No. 5 LHG.
- Have completed at least two years of relevant vocational training and have at least three years of professional experience. You will receive a subject-specific admission authorisation after passing an aptitude test in accordance with § 58 Para. 2 No. 6 LHG.
The aptitude test remains valid in accordance with the previous regulations until the new legal ordinance on the university-specific entrance examination (Section 58 Para. 3a) and the trial study programme (Section 58 Para. 3b).
Selection procedure
The application procedure takes place in two parts. Applicants who pass the first part are invited to the entrance examination.
Part 1: Application submission and pre-selection
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form (in English or German)
- Proof of education. If applicable, proof of previous periods of study as well as completed academic achievements and examination results (in English or German)
- Proof of sufficient English language skills (level B2)
- A video link with an instrumental or vocal performance of the applicant with a minimum duration of 15 minutes, consisting of three pieces from at least two different cultural traditions as well as an own composition or improvisation.
** The video must be unedited and the applicant must be fully visible, including his/her entire body.
** The video must contain a time marker (a running clock).

Part 2: Entrance examination
- A written and oral exam (basics of music theory, ear training; for non-pianists: basic piano skills), approx. 90 minutes, on site or via video conference
- A live performance on site or via video streaming of three pieces or parts of works from at least two different cultural traditions as well as an own composition or improvisation with a minimum duration of 20 minutes
- An oral interview (to assess the applicant's creativity, personality, motivation and knowledge of music history), approx. 20 minutes
The duration of the entrance examination is determined by the admissions committee.

- If you have any technical difficulties with the online application or if you have any questions about your application, your contact person will be happy to help you.
- If you fulfil the admission requirements, we will invite you to a selection process.
- If you are successful in the selection process, you will receive an acceptance letter and a study contract from us.
- You sign the study contract and send it back to us.
- You pay the enrolment fee.
- If you come from a non-EU country, you pay your tuition fee one semester in advance in addition to the registration fee. From the second semester onwards, payments for the remaining semesters are due six weeks before the end of the study period you have already paid for.
- We will send you your letter of admission.
- You take part in our Startklar days - and off you go with your studies!
