Open Research Area 8 - A multi-national and intersectional survey of weight-related stigmatization across the lifespan of women (ORA 8)

Brief description

Weight stigma is defined as social misperceptions and negative stereotypes related to weight.  Previous studies show that women who experience weight-related stigma are more likely to suffer from social withdrawal, have lower psychological well-being, and exhibit disordered eating behaviors. Women are exposed to stigmatizing messages across the lifespan because body ideals are transmitted from adolescence to adulthood.  These experiences can be internalized by women, which means that negative stereotypes are accepted and integrated into the self. Currently, knowledge on weight stigma is mainly drawn from homogeneous populations, such as heterosexual, white women from higher income countries. Factors such as migration, identification with a minority group in terms of migration or sexual orientation, socio-economic status and disability can influence experiences of stigmatization. Using an intersectionality approach, we will examine weight stigma among previously underrepresented women across the lifespan.
