Know & Grow: Education - self-management - empowerment for children and young people with rare chronic metabolic diseases

Brief description

Know & Grow is a cooperation project between Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin and 鶹ýӳ of Applied Sciences Heidelberg, Campus Berlin, which has been running since the beginning of 2022. The aim of the project is to develop information and educational material for children and young people with rare chronic metabolic diseases and their families. As metabolic diseases are extremely rare, there is very little educational material suitable for children that clearly explains the disease and illustrates the necessary therapeutic measures. As a result, parents have so far been left to their own devices and their own understanding of the disease to educate their children and explain the disease and its consequences to them.

The information and educational material developed by Know & Grow is intended to help affected children to deal with the metabolic disease in an age-appropriate manner from the outset and over the years in line with their development. It is being developed as a model project in Berlin and will benefit children from Berlin who are cared for at the Outpatient Clinic for Metabolic Diseases of the Children's Clinic with a focus on Gastroenterology, Nephrology and Metabolic Diseases and the Social Pediatric Center of the Charité Berlin. The results will later be made available to hospitals and institutions throughout Germany and internationally in English.
The project is being implemented by the 鶹ýӳ of Applied Sciences Heidelberg, Campus Berlin and the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Social Pediatric Center (SPZ) for chronically ill children. The project is supported by “Milupa/Nutricia Metabolics”, the Berlin “Sparkassenstiftung Medizin” and “BILD hilft e.V. ”Ein Herz für Kinder"
